We’re a group of photographers, artists, educators, researchers and archivists. We believe in supporting contemporary practitioners, engaging archival collections and developing critical dialogue to inform inovative work and foster opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration.
Éditions Emile was formed in 2019, inspired by our shared admiration for the life and work of editor, curator and ‘amateur’ photographer Emile F. Guiton (1879-1972).
Emile was the driving force behind the use of photography and the development of the photographic collections at the Société Jersiaise through the early and mid 20th Century. Éditions Emile has and will continue to have a close association and working relationship with the Société Jersiaise Photographic Archive (SJPA). Through our work, we seek to serve the interests of the SJPA, and the wider photographic community both on the Island and overseas.

Who was E. F. Guiton?
Honorary Curator of Jersey Museum and Editor of the Société Jersiaise Annual Bulletin. Emile is considered to be the founder of the Photographic Archive at the Société Jersiaise (SJPA). Emile was first and foremost an excellent photographer, making use of a rapidly expanding medium in the early 20th century to record important historical sites, objects and contemporary events.
Editorial Standards
As a publisher and publishing platform, we are committed to excellence in our application and interpretation of photography. We publish without bias towards, the subject, format, experience or purpose. Photography is our primary focus though we engage with all lens-based media and broader visual cultures. What unites our published work is that it seeks to engage critically with its subject and/or medium. All our editors and contributors follow the same core principles of being independent, critical, fair, ethical, inclusive and considerate.

What is the SJPA?
In 1992 the Photographic Archive (SJPA) was established to implement appropriate collections management policies for the photographic collections held by the Société Jersiaise Library. From its foundation in 1873, the Société actively encouraged the use of photography to achieve its aims, resulting in the natural accrual of photographic materials. In 1927 Emile F. Guiton was appointed to manage the Library’s first cabinet for housing photographic records.
